Jo Gives Additional Black Family History for Book Aid Auction

http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/MTarchives/week_2006_01_22.php

Previously we told you that author J.K. Rowling would be donating an item to auction in order to help Book Aid International, a group that helps support literacy in the world's poorest countries. This item was a handwritten paper from JKR. Today, the Daily Telegraph newspaper has a preview of this item. Reader Tony let us know that it is the Black Family Tree, with a portion of the names showing in a photo. Readers will remember of course, that we learned of the tree as it was on the tapestry at Grimmauld Place in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Tony writes:

"There are several familiar names visible, including Callidora who married a Harfang Longbottom. Her sister Charis who married Caspar Crouch. Intriguingly there is a Dorea (1920-1977) who married Charles Potter and had one child, a son. The time frame seems to be consistent with them being James' parents. "

He also says there is another listing of a name that is very intriguing to Potter fans "Arcturus Black (1884-1959). " The article goes on to mention these items will be on display Monday, February 20th at 24 Maddox Street London W1. Tickets to this event are £10, with proceeds going to charity. This paper from Jo , along with others, will then be auctioned off the next day. Thanks very much to Bald Tony and Michele for the heads up! Anyone with scans please send them in!

UPDATE: Amoscotia was nice enough to send in the scans, which you can SEE HERE, and HERE. Please note that most of the paper is covered up, but you can also make out some other names (Like Phineas Nigellus and his wife). The second page indicates that they expect this family tree page to sell at a very high price.
Thanks very much to Marauding Amoscotia

JKR in Romania: Day Two with Photos and More

http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/MTarchives/week_2006_01_22.php

J.K. Rowling is in her second day of her visit with the Children's High Level Group visit to Romania as part of an effort to raise awareness and funds for the orphans of Eastern Europe. Last night Jo attended a gala fundraising event, where thousands of dollars were raised from an auction, including the bidding for signed copies of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Last wire reports say:

According to the Mediafax news agency six copies of the latest adventure of the boy wizard, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince", autographed by author J.K. Rowling, went for between 5,000 and 18,000 euros each at a dinner Wednesday.

Rowling paid 8,500 euros for a football shirt belonging to Brazilian star Claudio Taffarel.

In all 170,000 euros were raised, the money to go to orphans throughout Europe.

While in Romania, Jo has been making several visits along the way, and we now have some nice new high res press photos (with captions), including two precious photos of Jo and recently abandoned infants, which you can see below. Jo was scheduled to be interviewed today, and although we are not certain if this interview was for both print and television press, Leaky can confirm that Jo will be taping something that will appear on the fundraiser which is due to be broadcast here soon. Stay tuned for more!

Update: Jo appeared on the broadcast briefly during the broadcast of the telethon today. There were two clips of her attending the black tie gala fundraiser . Jo (looking gorgeous in a black gown and great pair of earrings) was shown bidding for an autographed football shirt, and signed something as well. Later a taped appeal by our favorite author was broadcast in the program. In this very short statement, Jo said she was heartened by the work they are doing, and encouraged others out there to help as well. Anyone with screencaps or a clip, please send them in!

JKR: "Every Child Deserves a Secure and Loving Environment"

http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/MTarchives/week_2006_01_22.php

There are some additional stories online now about author J.K. Rowling's trip to Romania as part of the Children's High Level Group effort to improve conditions for children in Eastern European orphanages. The Scotsman reports that at a press conference earlier in Bucharest, Jo said: "I firmly believe that every child deserves a secure and loving environment. I am keen to build on your success here and in the wider world." The Herald also reports that Jo expressed her concern over the plight of these children in some of institutions:

"The social problems that lead to the placing of children in institutions are complex and will not be resolved quickly; however, that is a good reason for making a start as soon as possible. There is now widespread agreement among child health experts that irreparable long-term damage is caused to young children who are institutionalised without a parent."

Later in the evening, J.K. Rowling attended a gala fundraising dinner, where some of the orphaned children played classical music for her, and 10 autographed copies of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince were auctioned off in a fundraising effort.

We have some additional high res photos of her press conference below.

HBP Book Thief Sentenced to Prison Term

http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/MTarchives/week_2006_01_15.php

In June of last year, we reported on the case of two men, who stole early copies of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and then tried to sell them to the tabloids. These men were later caught and arrested. Today, one of the men involved was sentenced to four - and -a half years in jail for his involvement in the scheme. The BBC reports that" Aaron Lambert, 20, of Kettering, admits threatening a newspaper reporter with an imitation pistol while trying to sell two stolen copies of the novel. "

Sentencing him Judge Richard Bray said: "You realised the books had considerable potential value.

"It was only through the good services of the press and police that fans of Harry Potter - both young and old were able to read the book without their pleasure being polluted by the premature publication of the plot."

Thanks Sarah and Mike!
